HTTP Live Streaming technology is based on index files and audio files. Please check Apple's documentation: https://developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/NetworkingInternet/Conceptual/StreamingMediaGuide/Introduction/Introduction.html It's not like pointing to a single mp3 file.
